Acupuncture originated in China over 5000 years ago and is a healing system that
has been used and developed since then in many parts of the world.
It is currently used in hospitals in China and is practised alongside Western medicine,
both contributing equally to the provision of healthcare.
The effectiveness of acupuncture has been recognised by the World Health Organisation
for its success in the treatment of over 40 different diseases.
Acupuncture is used to treat specific symptoms and illnesses and as a preventative
treatment as it boosts the body’s immune system.
Extremely fine disposable needles are inserted at specific points on the body to
stimulate the body’s own healing response and restore its natural balance.
The needles are manipulated and either removed straight away, or left in, for up
to 20 minutes.
The initial sensation is often described as dull, heavy, or tingly. Sometimes adjuncts
such as moxibustion, cupping and electroacupuncture are used in appropriate cases.
